Evaluating Rare Earth Elements as Tracers of Fluvial Processes: Fine Sediment Transport and Deposition in a Small Stream

چکیده

Highlights Natural sediments labeled with rare earth elements can effectively be used as tracers for quantifying fine sediment transport and deposition. Two artificial floods in a small stream (100 ha watershed, 1.5 year return flow of 515 L s -1 ) transported 0 m to >850 at maximum rate 55 . Sediment deposition per unit area was greater the channel than near-channel floodplain. Use two distinct demonstrated resuspension extent during sequential high-flow events. Presence large wood associated reduced streamflow rate, decreased suspended velocity, increased deposition, near-floodplain Abstract Effective management requires an understanding lag time between best practice implementation observable changes target water body. To improve our times, we tested method label locally sourced quantify flow-through storage fluvial systems. We injected lanthanum ytterbium into flood During floods, collected quantified floodplain four cross-sections within study reach. down-gradient (90 850 m) time-integrated samplers evaluated total travel distance. tracer observations particle distances ranged from least s-1 (stream s-1). The majority mass entered first 69 Some particles that deposited following were resuspended either downstream or redeposited Our results support further use inform quality models, provide estimates times actions improvements. Stream Insects as Bioindicators of Fine Sediment

Fine inorganic sediment (≤ 2mm) is a major non-point source pollutant in streams. While some fine sediment in streams is natural, loads in human-impacted streams often exceed their capacity to flush these sediments during high flows. Regardless of the source, the negative effects of increased levels of fine sediment in streams are realized in all biotic components of stream ecosystems from micr...

Sediment fingerprinting in fluvial systems: review of tracers, sediment sources and mixing models

Suspended sediments in fluvial systems originate from a myriad of diffuse and point sources, with the relative contribution from each source varying over time and space. The process of sediment fingerprinting focuses on developing methods that enable discrete sediment sources to be identified from a composite sample of suspended material. This review identifies existing methodological steps for...

Estimating fluvial sediment transport: The rating parameters

Correlations between suspended sediment load rating parameters, river basin morphology, and climate provide information about the physical controls on the sediment load in rivers and are used to create predictive equations for the sediment rating parameters. Long-term time-averaged values of discharge, suspended load, flow duration, flow peakedness, and temporally averaged values of precipitati...

Rare Earth Elements Profile

Definitions and characteristics The rare earth elements (REE) (sometimes referred to as the rare earth metals) are a group of 17 chemically similar metallic elements, including the 15 lanthanides, scandium and yttrium. The lanthanides are elements spanning atomic numbers 57 (lanthanum, La) to 71 (lutetium, Lu) (Table 1). The lanthanides all occur in nature, although promethium, the rarest, only...
